Ground and basement maisonettes are ten-a-penny in London but ground and first floor apartments of this type are much rarer beasts. Plainly more sought after due to the fact they are lighter and have higher ceilings than their partially subterranean siblings, buyers will find themselves paying a premium for such apartments. Here we choose five of the best currently on offer:

 

Cresswell Gardens, South Kensington, SW5 — £3.4 million

For sale through “garden square specialists” Kaye & Carey and backing directly onto private communal gardens, this 1,311 square foot apartment has three double bedrooms and two bathrooms. It is described as being “a very good alternative to a typical Chelsea cottage at the same price”.

 

Hill Street, Mayfair, W1 — £16.95 million

Ideal for a bachelor who likes to entertain and having such features as a cigar room that links a sitting room and dining room, this share of freehold apartment benefits from a 24-hour concierge and off-street parking. It also has an impressive first floor drawing room, three bedrooms and three bathrooms and is for sale through Beauchamp Estates.

 

Lennox Gardens, Knightsbridge, SW1X — £15.95 million

Almost like a low-built house in terms of the space on offer, the Knightsbridge office of Savills offers this 5,153 square foot apartment in one of London’s most sought after garden squares. It is cited as being “ideal for entertaining on a grand scale” and has six bedrooms, six bathrooms, two terraces and a sauna.

 

Chesham Street, Belgravia, SW1 — £6.95 million
