Messing about in cars

A 2003 Bentley R-Type road racer is most definitely a car that would appeal to Toad of Toad Hall

Described as a “real road burner and hooligan’s toy”, a 2003 Bentley R-Type road racer built by Petersen Engineering is a car that most definitely would appeal to Kenneth Grahame’s Toad of Toad Hall. It is currently for sale through Vintage & Prestige Fine Motorcars for £420,000.

Based on the chassis of a Bentley R-Type from 1953, this supercharged stunner is clad with a muscular aluminium body and seats two in Bentley style bucket seats. It has a 6.5-litre straight eight Rolls-Royce engine and can produce in excess of 400bhp.

The vehicle, described as being “built in the style of the outer circuit Brooklands racers” for a Mr M. Bresser, has covered just 4,000 miles since new. It is presented in excellent condition having been sent back to Bob Peterson by the current owner for an update that cost £23,000.

Last sold in 2009 at the Bonhams Paris sale for £241,35, of the R-Type Richard Biddulph of Vintage & Prestige Fine Motorcars told The Steeple Times: “This car is about as ‘in your face’ as they come”. In adding that it truly will “appeal to bounders and cads”, he plainly hopes that a real life Mr Toad will get out their cheque book.
