The introducers who change our lives

Doreen Lofthouse OBE MBE (AKA “Mrs Fisherman’s Friend”)

Doreen LofthouseCredited with taking Fisherman’s Friend global, Fleetwood based Doreen Lofthouse is modest, decent and unpretentious. Having married Tony, the great grandson of the company’s founder, Mrs Lofthouse secured international distribution for their lozenges and built a multi-million pound business. A generous philanthropist and co-founder of The Lofthouse Foundation, Doreen Lofthouse has donated millions to her local community and after her home was raided in 2009, she donated the £500,000 insurance payout towards a car number plate recognition system for Lancashire Police to try to prevent similar ordeals for others. Of her success, she once commented: “To be a successful entrepreneur, you must be fearless. Fisherman’s Friend is our baby. It allows us to employ several hundred people. It is our responsibility to ensure that the company continues to grow”. We salute her mantra wholeheartedly.

  1. I absolutely agree.
I live only a couple of miles away from Doreen, she, and her family are true “Rags to Riches” down to earth people.
You probably don’t know this, but way back in time, when Fleetwood was a thriving Fishing Port, (My father was a Trawlerman). .Lofthouses was a small chemist shop, selling linctus for the Fishermen to use on the long trips to Iceland, this mixture, was eventually re-designed into a lozenge, far easier to consume in gale force wins on a pitching trawler.
Doreen has invested heavily in the town of Fleetwood, even though the Fishing Industry has all but disappeared, Certainly compared with the huge number of vessels which used to land their catch up to around 1985.
Doreen is indeed an example of a bygone age of entrepreneurship, who was and is still in for the long term, looking after her Employees and re-investing profits back into her business.and the Town itself. Indeed the Promenade was totally Block paved using Doreens’s funds, also a Statue of EROS was erected, (funded by Doreen) at the Roundabout on the entrance to Fleetwood.
