Born in Kashan, Iran, David Alliance moved to Manchester at the age of eighteen and co-founded the multi-billion pound Coats Viyella (now known as Coats PLC) textile empire. A leading philanthropist, a financial contributor to the Liberal Democrats and a collector of works by Lowry, Alliance once remarked: “What drives me is the desire to make an impact with everything I do”.
