There are galloping gourmets and then there’s Frederick Gross and George Hammond. This pair liked the restaurants of Knightsbridge and Mayfair so much that though they couldn’t afford to eat there, they did anyway and left without paying. Having racked up bills and at The Berkeley Hotel, the London Hilton, The Mandarin Oriental and The Dorchester totalling £765, they were caught by a combination of CCTV and the DNA on a pair of glasses left by Hammond at a table. Gross – whose most recent previous conviction for dishonesty landed him with a 15-month jail sentence in 2003 – received a community order for his crimes in October 2015; Hammond will be sentenced at a later date.
