The Marmite of Michael

Michael Winner retires as a restaurant critic

Restaurateurs throughout the land are sighing with relief: Michael Winner has hung up his hat and retired as a restaurant critic.

Michael Winner

Love or loathe him, Winner’s column for The Sunday Times has entertained and provoked the nation for some 20 years. In this time, he has been banned from establishments for his acerbic remarks and incurred the wrath of many of his readers.

Mr Winner, who finally married Geraldine Lynton-Edwards last year and who is suffering with ill health, was lauded and mocked again today in a tribute article in the paper. One reader, Liam O’Flanagan commented: “How can we survive Sunday mornings without you?” whilst another, Sheila Taylor, added: “Don’t leave me like this!”

Like Marmite, Winner’s words were not to everyone’s tastes but we at The Steeple Times think the world will be a poorer place without his weekly rant.

  1. Winner’s column was the ultimate wind-up and the first item I looked at on Sunday mornings. I will miss him. Hope he comes back sometime soon to kick a few more so-called restaurants into touch.

  2. Seize the moment Matthew and invite him to write the occasional critique (on any topic) for you. It would be a splendid foil for yourself and be refreshing compared with the one or two, vapid, low-life brayer-conmententors who pollute your columns.

  3. Matthew Steeples covers controversial subject matters. Debate allows us to see a different point of view. We can learn from each other, develop our knowledge and opinions. People can be offended when their point of view is challenged. The ignorance of other people’s interpretations and views can cause hostility and anger. We are entitled to our opinions. Glenmore must be more tolerant to other people’s opinions.
Death Wish (1974) was a awesome movie, directed by Michael Winner. What a legend.
