Bloomberg on Brexit

Section:

Billionaire and former Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg condemns Brexit as “the single stupidest thing any country has ever done” apart from America electing Donald Trump

As Michael Bloomberg opened a vast new European headquarters in London on Tuesday, The Guardian revealed a series of comments he’d made two weeks ago about Brexit.

In a speech to the HUBweek conference in Boston, Bloomberg condemned the election of Donald Trump but also suggested: “It is really hard to understand why a country [Britain] that was doing so well wanted to ruin it” by voting for Brexit.

Separately, on a previous occasion, this wise man also pointed out: “[Britain] didn’t have an immigration problem and they didn’t need control of their borders. They have the English Channel – that gave them control of their borders.” We join those saluting him.

Mr Bloomberg’s comments in Boston follow:

We are opening a brand new European headquarters in London – two big, expensive buildings. Would I have done it if I knew they were going to drop out? I’ve had some thoughts that maybe I wouldn’t have, but we are there, we are going to be very happy.

My former wife was a Brit, my daughters have British passports, so we love England – it’s the father of our country, I suppose. But what they are doing is not good and there is no easy way to get out of it because if they don’t pay a penalty, everyone else would drop out. So they can’t get as good of a deal as they had before.

I did say that I thought [Brexit] was the single stupidest thing any country has ever done but then we Trumped it.

One of the things that is hurting us both in the United States and in the UK is that we have employees, not a lot but some, who are starting to say: ‘I don’t want to work here – can we transfer to some place else? This country doesn’t like immigrants.’

All this talk in Washington – words have consequences. Whether we change the immigration laws or not, there is general feeling around the world that America is no longer an open, welcoming place and a lot of people don’t want to go there, and the same thing is happening in the UK because of Brexit.

It is really hard to understand why a country that was doing so well wanted to ruin it. It was not a smart thing to do and getting out of it is going to be very difficult and is going to be very painful. It will hurt industries. People are already taking space in other cities over there [Europe], us included.

  1. WTF????????????? Hypocrite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bet he took subsidies from the ropey Muslim mayor and Trump hater………………….. Intolerant bastard Khan is not going to MAKE LONDON GREAT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! He put you in a pit of s**t and you fall for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bloomberg is just using him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dirty c*******r!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lock them both up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF???????????

  2. Rod is right. Bloomberg is a hypocritical liar and Trump targeter and MAGA opposer. Disgusting crook – Britain you are welcome to him.

  3. Oh here we go again. Supporting anti-Brexit, anti-Great Britain propoganda. Just what I expect from someone who helped get Viscount St Davids taken away from his loving family. Well, Rhodri is free again now and decent people know that you and that b***h Gina Miller are scum of the salt. I should set my dog on you.

    • Are you still in la la land Stacey? It was not Matthew who stuck the nasty viscount in jail for threatening people with their lives and asking people to terrorise his victims. He should have got 4 years to remind feral internet users to behave themselves. Gina Miller spoke up for democracy The courts made the decisions to uphold her case and the courts made the decision to jail viscount nasty. “Gina Miller named Britain’s most influential black person”. She joins some very illustrious people who have been responsible for huge benefits to society. She said there was a period when she was unable to travel on public transport or go out with her family at the weekends due to the death and rape threats she received after the initial High Court challenge last November. I do not believe that any person in this country should suffer that. I think the incompetent Wheatfield Wanderer should exit and we need someone like Gina Miller in her place. Well said Bloomberg.

      • I suppose all that ‘rural’ Herefordshire cyder had rotten what little brain remains.
Gina Miller is a rank opportunist. The fact, like or not, is that the people spoke and decided that they did not wish to be part of a federal EU superstate. They were probably also horrified that Albania and Moldavia-two crime ridden and corrupt statelets would soon be joining. That will do wonders for out crime rate!
As for Gina Miller being black…
Are bonkers? She is a Sikh by origin and the Sikhs feel very insulted at being described as black.
Now, off you go to the pub and have more cyder, you silly dimwit!

  4. As a property professional I have to tell you that the market has been very badly affected at the top end for all the reasons Michael B suggests. It is not a good state of affairs.

  5. Great insights from Bloomberg – will driver the Leavers even nuttier.

A shame people above make such vile comments about our mayor just because he’s a Nuslim. He’s doing a great job.

  6. Bloomberg has a different agenda.
He doesn’t care if the EU crashes on towards a federalist superstate: well, I do and millions of others do.
It might suit Bloomberg’s business model but it doesn’t suit the majority.

  7. This is what the EU does. 1. It takes billions of our money 2. It then gives those billions as incentives to international industry to relocate factories from high cost manufacturing areas to low cost countries like Poland. 3. So we, and other high cost countries find ourselves subsidising the loss of whatever industries we have left. 4. The EU haven’t quite finished f*****g us up yet 5. Then they encourage unemployed low cost labour from low cost countries to flood to the UK putting downward pressure on indigenous wage rates and vast pressure on the NHS, education and housing. Tell Tusk to take a hike. There’s nothing in this crazy EU for us. Oh, and Tusk when are you Poles going to pay your way?
