Ban the bashing of Brooks

Rebekah Brooks sees off the first of five charges

I am by no means an apologist for Rebekah Brooks but, equally, I have repeatedly argued that she ought not to be the sole scapegoat for phone hacking. Yesterday, after the first of five charges in her trial was dismissed, a milestone was reached and it is one that I suspect may set the way for what is to come in the phone hacking trial.

Brooks has become the poster girl for all that is wrong about the media despite actually having been an example of a lady whose career path has been meteoric. The daughter of a gardener and born in Warrington, Cheshire, this redhead was once described as a “likeable, skinny, hollow-eyed girl who was very ambitious” by Private Eye. Her lawyer in this case was quite right to comment:

“She is not being tried because she was the editor of a tabloid newspaper… Neither is she on trial for having worked for Rupert Murdoch’s company”.

The case against Brooks looks increasingly weak. As with other trials of this nature, one is starting to see a pattern of what is to come emerging. In the meantime, I’d suggest that the bashing of Brooks in the popular press ceases.

  1. It is a waste of time. A ship of fools. Reading articles about witchcraft and sorcery is more interesting and strangely enough makes more sense. The worldwide press have never practiced their craft to the rule books, and they never will, nor will politicians. We live in a very bent society. In my humble opinion.

  2. Utter nonsense….Brookes was editor of this vile and and dissembling newspaper. As such, she must have known- and thus sanctioned the illegal prying into the lives of innocent people.
And I struggle to understand exactly what you are suggesting here …”Brooks has become the poster girl for all that is wrong about the media despite actually having been an example of a lady whose career path has been meteoric.”
I know many whose career paths have been meteoric: it doesn’t make them good or worthy people.

If she is being ‘bashed’ it’s because her ‘meteoric career’ also made her countless enemies.
Anyone who is a protegee of Murdoch is worthy of close scrutiny.

  3. The secret of unlimited success is based on a law set in motion, an attempt to discover this phenomenon can prove rather problematic as the secret is buried within a myriad of unrealised philosophies that tend to work only for the wealthy elite. It would be rather naïve to believe that it is all over for Rebekah Brooks. Good fortunes will once again be bestowed on Rebekah Brooks, as soon as the storm is over.
Rebekah Brooks will be given the opportunity to pen her memoirs, telling her side of the story. Lucrative book deals await her. I can imagine the title of her book, “Cinderella Liberty; Who flung the dung”
Any which way, Rebekah Brooks can’t lose. The wealthy elite never do. Lord Jeffery Archer is living testimony to this, he sold 250 Million copies of his book worldwide. Lord Archer laughed all the way to the bank, so will Rebekah Brooks.

  4. Let me give Lord Brocket , a mention too. He has done very well for himself too, flogging bangers and all. It is not over until the fat lady sings. Lord Brocket was able to unlock the secrets, and for those who can, crime will always pay.
