Britain needs to get tough on knife crime suggests Matthew Steeples; we need a Giuliani-like figure to counter Mrs May
In a depressing reversal of fortunes, New York is now safer than London. With knife crimes rife in our capital and elsewhere also and murders happening daily, decent people are naturally shocked and shared.
In spite of our hapless Prime Minister – who it must also be remembered was the worst Home Secretary in history and the woman who closed so many of our police stations – suggesting there is no correlation between knife crime and a decline in police numbers, anyone rational would realise she is plainly wrong.
The solution? Britain needs not a lily livered Sadiq Khan type, but instead a Giuliani-like figure and we need one now. What is required is someone who seizes the phrase (which sadly got turned into a bit of a laughing stock) “tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime” and someone who cuts through all the excuses. Where are they when they’re needed? The answer: As Delia Smith once said: “Let’s be ‘avin’ ya.”
