Mosley’s mouthpiece

Mosley's mouthpiece - If Impress accept a situation where they are largely dependent on donations from Max Mosley, independent regulation of the press will be nothing but a joke

As it is revealed that the new ‘independent’ organisation to regulate the press is largely dependent on donations from Max Mosley, Matthew Steeples suggests it is just about as useful as the hapless predecessor run by Sir Christopher Meyer that it replaces

“Red socked fop” Sir Christopher Meyer as chairman of the Press Complaints Commission was rightly described by Lord Prescott as “hopelessly ineffectual” but now, it seems, that joke of an organisation’s replacement is headed the same way.

In a report in today’s Mail Online, it is revealed that Impress – the supposedly “independent, state-backed” regulator of the press created in the wake of the phone hacking scandal – will rely on £3.8 million of donations over four years from a fervently anti-press campaigner, Max Mosley.

Impress describes itself as “the first truly independent press regulator in the UK” but dependency on a man whose agenda is the destruction of those members of the media who exposed his antics at a sadomasochistic orgy in 2008 is wrong. Effectively if this state of affairs is accepted, Mosley – who also settled a long running dispute with Google over their continuing to show images of the occasion on their search engine in May 2015 – will be the master of the media and Impress will be nothing but his mouthpiece.

That, put simply, should not be allowed.
