Out routed

New £354,000 Route Master bus crashes on Chelsea Bridge Road on second day in service

On Saturday, on seeing one of Boris Johnson’s new Route Master buses on the Kings Road, I commented about how impressive this vehicle was. Little did I expect, therefore, that only a day later, the very same vehicle would have ended up in a six vehicle pile up on Chelsea Bridge Road.

The £354,000 bus, which is said to have been “in service but off route”, is said to have run a red light and was travelling at speed. Observers commented that the bus appeared to be “out of control” and three people were seriously injured as a result of the collision.

Given that these buses – of which Johnson has ordered 600 – were also dubbed “cauldrons on wheels” in July after faults with their air conditioning were exposed, this does not bode well. Are the wheels falling off this £212 million project?
