Piers Morgan questioned over phone hacking
For too long Operation Weeting has focused on Rebekah Brooks. Now, with the revelation that Piers Morgan has been questioned under caution over alleged phone hacking, Scotland Yard are finally starting to wake up and smell the coffee.
Brooks, as I’ve pointed out before, suits the role of scapegoat in this affair since she’s redheaded, of working class stock, has a slight look of Lady Macbeth and was Rupert Murdoch’s favourite lieutenant. Whether Morgan is charged or not, he certainly deserves to be investigated given claims he’s previously made as does Alan Rusbridger of The Guardian.
Morgan’s comments are telling. In 2007, he told the Press Gazette that phone hacking was an “investigative practice that everyone knows was going on at almost every paper in Fleet Street for years”. He subsequently tried to retract his statement and rubbished his own remarks as “rumours”.
The cancer that has spread through newspapers is not limited to Brooks and Weeting should not have focused solely on her and Andy Coulson. Equally, if Sir Christopher Meyer had run a tighter ship as head of the Press Complaints Commission we wouldn’t be in this fine mess. The public should be reminded of that also.
