The VIP abuse of VIP abuse

Investigation into VIP abuse must continue suggests Matthew Steeples

In the true story featured in the Oscar winning film Spotlight, journalists working on exposing abuse by Catholic priests were subjected to attempts to silence their investigations. They did not stop and those working on exposing what went on at such places as the Elm Guest House must not give up in the wake of the collapse of the allegations an individual named only as ‘Nick’ gave to Operation Midland.

What went on at the Elm Guest House in Barnes must not be swept under the carpet

Whilst what was suggested regarding Lord Bramall and Harvey Proctor has now been rejected, the likes of Simon Danczuk MP and Zac Goldsmith MP are right to continue to pursue claims of abuse by high-ranking individuals. It did happen and the overwhelming evidence against such beasts as Lord Boothby, Sir Cyril Smith, Lord Janner and Sir Peter Morrison would never have been exposed without journalists and politicians prepared to delve deeper into the murky worlds such members of the establishment inhabited.

It is undoubtedly regrettable that some have been falsely accused and it would certainly be right for Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe to apologise for that. It would not, however, be right to forget the many innocent victims of VIP abuse who’ve been ignored for so long in favour of protecting the establishment and it would not be right to give up on seeking out justice for them.
