Wally of the Week: Keith Vaz

Labour Keith Vaz Lord Janner

It is time that the Labour politician Keith Vaz asked himself some questions about his role in protecting the alleged paedophile Lord Janner

Keith Vaz is a politician continually linked with controversy and in today’s The Observer Jay Rayner was right to highlight the role of this expenses lover in protecting the alleged paedophile turned most convenient dementia sufferer Lord Janner.

Keith Vaz has been involved in various controversies but, after having been shown as a one time supporter of Lord Janner, he now ought to consider his own position

In his article today and another last Sunday, Rayner highlighted how he had been shown incriminating evidence against Janner, then Labour MP for Leicester West, in the 1990s and that Keith Vaz, the MP for the neigbouring Leicester East constituency, had described his “dear friend” as a “victim of a cowardly and wicked attack”. Soon after, Rayner suggests, “the story was dead… It was just never spoken of again”.

Vaz, who was himself suspended from the House of Commons for one month in 2002 for making false allegations against a policewoman, Rayner points out, now presents himself “as a champion of the voiceless, happy to castigate the Home Office over its handling of the current investigation into child abuse”. In reality, however, as Keith Vaz pompously presides over the Commons home office affairs select committee, it is perhaps our most worthy Wally of the Week who should be asking himself some questions about why he chose to speak up for a truly vile alleged paedophile.
