Archie Hume: “What’s on your mantelpiece?”

‘The Steeple Times’ asks country clothing specialist Archie Hume: “What’s on your mantelpiece?”

The Steeple Times shares “wit and wisdom”. What’s your guiding force?

To care about people and have fun.

“Don’t get even, get medieval” is, in our humble opinion, a great motto. What’s yours?

Forgive but never forget.

Kerry Katona was considered unacceptable in 2007. Who or what is unacceptable in 2015?

Nigel Farage, Alex Salmond, Donald Trump and Rupert Murdoch.

Tony Blair misses being Prime Minister. What do you miss most in your life?

Having enough time in my life to spend with my friends.

What might you swap all your wealth for?

To be healthy and happy is far more important than to have wealth.

Donald Trump was once a case of: “If you owe the bank a thousand, they close you down; but if you owe the bank a billion, you own the bank”. What’s your view on the banking crisis?

The bank ruined so many peoples’ lives but I don’t think they cared.

What phrase or word do you most loathe?

“Reading from the same hymn sheet”.

In the UK, some people consider charity to “begin at home”. What’s your view and what causes do you personally support?

I like to support several charities each year. This year’s choices are Help for Heroes, Water Aid, Borders Children’s Charity and The Margaret Kerr Unit (the last two are local charities to the Scottish borders).

The judge in Law Abiding Citizen states: “I can pretty much do whatever I want” before being blown up whilst answering her mobile phone. What’s your view on the appropriate use of such devices?

Devices are great as long as they are there to help but not take over your life.

If you could fill a carriage on The Orient Express, who would be your fellow passengers?

Twelve close friends: No celebrities, no famous people. I don’t have enough time to spend quality time with my friends so this would be the ideal opportunity.

If you were unfortunate enough to end up on death row, what would be your last meal and where would you eat it?

Roast beef and all the trimmings followed by banoffee pie.

What time is it acceptable to consume the first drink of the day?

As soon as you are thirsty.

A Negroni, a martini or a cup of tea?

A Negroni.

Whose parties do you enjoy the most and why?

My own: I love to have a fun time with my friends who have a great sense of humour.

Who is the most positive person you know?

A local farmer named Grant Todd.

What’s your most guilty pleasure?

Cadbury’s Dairy Milk.

If a tattoo were to sum you up, what would it be of?

Swallows: When I go home I like to have a cup of coffee in my garden and watch the birds fly in the sky.

If you were a car, what marque would you be?

I am not much into cars, an old banger would do me fine.

Cilla Black presented Surprise, Surprise. Tell us the most surprising thing about you.

It surprises me that I am truly bad at sport and especially at golf, cricket, rugby. I thoroughly enjoy these sports but I have no talent at any of them.

What’s currently sitting on your mantelpiece?

A few party invitations, I don’t like to stay in on a Saturday night.

    1. Archie….please do not use that ghastly expression, ‘Quality Time’….all time has quality….And don’t be silly about Nigel F: from his ‘casualwear’ it could seem he is one of your customers…and he speaks highly of you.
