Could the failure of the makeover of Merida be a positive sign for Rebekah Brooks?
Merida, Disney Pixar’s heroine in Brave, has had a makeover. Notwithstanding the new look, however, she still looks like Rebekah Brooks.
Just like Ms. Brooks, Merida has been in the midst of controversy of late after an “extreme makeover of sorts” that hasn’t gone down too well with her creator. Equally, just as Rupert Murdoch leapt to the defence of his protégé, Brave’s creator, Brenda Chapman, was outraged at Merida’s waist being trimmed, her dress “bedazzled” and her eyelashes “tinted”. Of the changes, the Oscar winner commented:
“I think it’s atrocious what they have done to Merida… A blatantly sexist marketing move based on money… When little girls say they like it because it’s more sparkly, that’s all fine and good but, subconsciously, they are soaking in the sexy ‘come hither’ look and the skinny aspect of the new version. It’s horrible! Merida was created to break that mold — to give young girls a better, stronger role model, a more attainable role model, something of substance, not just a pretty face that waits around for romance”.
Those who have already dismissed Rebekah Brooks better take stock. Over 100,000 have signed a petition against Disney’s changes to Merida. Maybe, still yet, the legions will come out for Rebekah.
