Red is Good

Matthew Steeples celebrates red fashion as Debenhams ditch red braces

Debenhams and the Mail Online recently suggested that the “garish” red braces, as sported by Gordon Gekko in Wall Street, have fallen out of fashion.

A spokesman for the store commented:

“The days when Gordon Gekko was a fashion symbol in the City has come to an end. City workers are abandoning styles once associated with flamboyant deal making and opting instead for colours which enhance the impression of being a safe pair of hands”.

“[After grey] our next most popular colour for braces is beige. We’re assuming that these are now the braces of choice when today’s bankers really want to let their hair down”.

How incredibly dull. We at The Steeple Times celebrate all things red and below display a selection of our favourite colourful characters:

Reader Kimmo Kuusisto takes his love of all things red to another level.
Ladies in red: Claire Rubinstein submitted this image of a red loving Sainsbury’s shopper and @Ellsbellsloves supplied one of herself fully kitted out in our favourite colour. We have to also admire this regular at Christie’s (right) who often sports red and has a slight look of Hyacinth Bucket about her.
Reader Lev Trubkovich wore a “Free Khodorkovsky” shirt under his jumper “entirely by accident” whilst covering President Obama arriving at JFK.
Red fashion fails: Roman Polanski’s wife Emmanuelle Seigner slips up on the red carpet at Cannes and @LaurenceBenson’s submission of a man in red in a war zone is plainly illustrative of the case of someone who failed to look in the mirror before setting out on his mission.

Greed might not be good anymore but red most definitely is. May the fashion of Gordon Gekko please swiftly return.
