Review: Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen: Cracking China

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen

Interior decorator Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen showed himself as nothing other than predictable, arrogant and ridiculous in an hour long BBC Two documentary

On Monday night, the interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen appeared in a documentary. The result was unsurprising and that this narcissistic fool showed himself to be annoying and ridiculous could have been easily predicted.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen

BBC Two’s Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen: Cracking China featured the camper than camp designer declaring: “I am the brand, I am the product” and little else. Clad in tasteless suits and a beard worthy of Charles I, Llewelyn-Bowen – who last came to public attention when a tacky Christmas attraction he designed closed after being branded a “rip-off” in December 2014 – was filmed visiting China and Mexico attempting to sell his pompously named House of Lawrence brand to department stores. He patronised everyone whose paths he crossed.

At a meeting with a distributor, Llewelyn-Bowen presented a framed photo of himself; in Mexico, he turned up with his products in a bin liner and in all seriousness announced: “They’ll just think I’m a really chic Santa”. Such lines as: “It’s really important to evolve your mojo as you go on – otherwise you end up ossified, like Valentino’s hair – which is almost museum-quality exhibit A” were the staple and all in all an hour of this gaudy nonsense was simply too much.

The lesson from this programme, however, was simple: Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and his tat have has little a place in China and Mexico as they do in Britain. It is time that this bogus Brit simply gave up.
