The Steeple Times asks Sarah Symonds: “What’s on your mantelpiece?”
The Steeple Times shares “wit and wisdom”. What’s your guiding force?
The intense desire to help women globally, by teaching them ‘heartache prevention’ techniques. I motivate the Sisterhood NOT be manipulated or used by men, by simply empowering them to know they deserve better, while reminding them NEVER to get involved with a cheating married man.
“Don’t get even, get medieval” is, in our humble opinion, a great motto. What’s yours?
Don’t get even, get happy.
Kerry Katona was considered unacceptable in 2007. Who or what is unacceptable in 2013?
Where do I start: Rhianna and Rhianna’s X-rated music videos. Lady Gaga and everything about her. The Embarrassing Bodies show on TV. Our open door immigration policies. Weak British judges handing out pathetic sentences. Injustice. Dog owners who let their ‘weapon’ dogs walk off the leash in public. The adverts on SKY news of starving African babies being shoved in our face continually.
Tony Blair misses being Prime Minister. What do you miss most in your life?
Living in California.
What might you swap all your wealth for?
What wealth?
Donald Trump was once a case of: “If you owe the bank a thousand, they close you down; but if you owe the bank a billion, you own the bank”. What’s your view on the banking crisis?
It is disgusting. More disgusting is how we as a nation – as usual – have rolled over and let it happen to us. Many of these bankers should be in jail. We have the cheek to try to sentence journalists for hacking phones to get information that was often necessary, yet with the bankers who are proven guilty they just walk free and often still get bonuses. Shameful. Makes a joke of our country and of our justice system.
What phrase or word do you most loathe?
“In layman’s terms”.
In the UK, some people consider charity to “begin at home”. What’s your view and what causes do you personally support?
Charity DEFINITELY begins at home. I look after a few of my elderly relatives, and that’s the way it should be. I never give to charity as I do not trust the money will go to the designated cause. Just look at Children in Need. They raise millions each year, but somehow we keep hearing about the level of child poverty, abuse, and neglect in this country. Love to know where all that money actually DOES go.
The judge in Law Abiding Citizen states: “I can pretty much do whatever I want” before being blown up whilst answering her mobile phone. What’s your view on the appropriate use of such devices?
They are messy and very final. I would say make sure you definitely have the right person before taking such extreme measures!
If you could fill a carriage on The Orient Express, who would be your fellow passengers?
My parents, my uncle Fred, Barry Mannilow, life coach Anthony Robbins, Pamela Anderson and American movie director Nancy Meyers.
If you were unfortunate enough to end up on death row, what would be your last meal and where would you eat it?
A chicken tikka masalla, with pilau rice and a Peshwari naan, with a nice cold glass of chardonnay. Eaten at my local restaurant The Three Mughals.
What time is it acceptable to consume the first drink of the day?
8am if it’s a vodka and orange (never just vodka at that hour). If you’re not a morning person then a glass of wine with lunch is acceptable. If you’re not a lunch person then just the glass of wine will suffice. If you are trying to cut down in general, then I’d say 6pm – happy hour – is the ideal time for the first one of the day.
A Negroni, a martini or a cup of tea?
A cup of (Welsh) tea. Welsh tea is a really strong brew. You can’t beat it.
Whose parties do you enjoy the most and why?
My own as I know I will enjoy all the guests as I invited them. Plus I know my drinks will always be nice and strong as I don’t believe in measures at my parties. Also, at your own parties, you don’t have to wear heels.
Who is the most positive person you know?
My mother, Jean Symonds.
What’s your most guilty pleasure?
Watching episodes of Eastenders I’ve missed in bed.
If a tattoo were to sum you up, what would it be of?
The scales of justice.
If you were a car, what marque would you be?
No idea. But I know it would be fast, and a limited edition.
Cilla Black presented Surprise, Surprise. Tell us the most surprising thing about you.
I’m a really nice and very sweet, thoughtful and caring person.
What’s currently sitting on your mantelpiece?
I don’t have a mantelpiece.
