Broadcaster turned author Judy Finnigan tries to excuse the conduct of a convicted rapist
Did Judy Finnigan have a bottle or three before joining ITV’s Loose Women television show panel on Monday? Asked about what she thought about the convicted rapist Ched Evans being allowed to return to play for Sheffield United, she bizarrely stated: “The rape wasn’t violent… He didn’t cause any bodily harm to the person”.
Finnigan – who was subsequently branded “stupid”, “shameful” and “disgusting” on Twitter – suggested Evans’ behaviour was “unpleasant” but argued that he’d “served his time”. She continued:
“It’s worth thinking, isn’t it, that he actually still, having been convicted, he still denies his guilt. You can look at that from two ways. You could look at that and think, right well, he’s not sorry, he’s not admitted any remorse. Why should he come back and be a football player? Or you could think he feels he didn’t do it so he wants to become rehabilitated in his own way”.
Worse still, Finnigan then effectively blamed the victim for what happened when she added: “She had far too much to drink”. Something about glasshouses comes to mind given that Ms Finnigan herself has been the subject of commentary about her own liking for the odd glass or ten. For this reason, this ridiculous woman just had to be our Wally of the Week.
