Carbisdale Castle offered for a knock-down price of just £21.70 per square foot
We featured Carbisdale Castle when it was offered to the market for £1.2 million in August 2014 and now after an aborted sale, its price has been slashed to just £900,000.
Featuring 41,433 square foot of accommodation and 40 bedrooms, the last castle to be built in Scotland was constructed between 1906 and 1917 for the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland. It was loaned to King Haakon VII and Crown Prince Olav of Norway during the Second World War by its then owner, a Norweigan whaling tycoon named Colonel Theodore Salvesen, and then gift to the Scottish Youth Hostel Association in 1944.
After suffering extensive water damage in 2010, £2 million was spent on repairs to the B-listed building but given yet more money was required a decision was made to sell the building. A buyer stepped forward with plans for a £6.5 million investment to create luxury hotel with a Michelin starred restaurant and an agreement was made to purchase an additional 100 acres to add to the existing 16 acre plot, but this fell through.
Of the castle, selling agent Harry Maitland of Savills told the Mail Online:
“Carbisdale is a magical property, rich in history. It will either make an incredible trophy home for a buyer from Scotland or much further afield, who is keen to restore the interior to its former glory”.
“While significant refurbishment works have been carried out on the fabric of the property, there is also incredible potential to repurpose this fairytale castle as a hotel”.
