“Supremely rare” 1959 BMW 507 roadster to be auctioned in New York on 10th December 2015
For our final pick of the star lots of today’s RM Sotheby’s Driven by Disruption auction in New York, we have chosen a “minimalist” 1959 BMW 507 Roadster Series II.
Described as a “supremely valuable, important, trendsetting, and brand-defining sports car” and a “halo car”, the 507 to be sold was designed by Count Albrecht von Goertz (1914 – 2006), a protégé of the famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy (1893 – 1986), and is one of just 217 of the second-series variants produced. RM Sotheby’s remark that it has “a light, almost feline, design of remarkable refinement, married to a powerful V8 engine” and that it is “something almost otherworldly—lithe, fast and utterly beautiful”.
Restored in the 1980s and fitted with an unnumbered, factory-correct replacement engine, the 97.6-inch wheelbase car is offered with an estimate of £1.5 million to £1.7 million ($2.3 million to $2.6 million, €2.1 million to €2.4 million).
