Grade II* listed house for sale for £5.75 million complete with half an acre of gardens and a private mosque
It is not uncommon to find British country houses for sale with private chapels but Grove House at Hampton comes complete with something else: Its own private mosque.
Originally known as Brick House and built in the 17th century, Grove House was extended and remodeled in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Aside from its impressive appearance, this 6,515 square foot six/seven bedroom house includes not only a grand entrance hall and two fine reception rooms but also a domed Moorish Room.
Added circa 1892 and with a style based on drawings of the Alhambra by the architect Owen Jones (1809 – 1874), an influential figure in the formation of what is now the Victoria & Albert Museum in South Kensington, the Moorish Room was built at the behest of J. C. Stutfield ( – 1925), a retired army officer who possibly converted to Islam whilst in the East. It was possibly used as a private mosque by Stutfield, is described by English Heritage as “very rare” and is now listed by selling agents Hamptons as a “music room”.
Presented in excellent condition having been restored after a lengthy period used as offices, Grove House is now for sale for £5,750,000.
