Five of the Best: Homes for petrolheads

A selection of homes that automobile enthusiasts will adore

It’s well known that those who love tinkering around with cars like to keep their beauties in luxury. Here, The Steeple Times selects five homes where petrolheads have taken their passions to another level:

Park Lodge, 1 Ennismore Street, London – £16.5 million ($26.4 million)

petrolheadsIn Knightsbridge, London Capital have incorporated a glass wall to view the studded rubber floored garage of a 4-bedroom house they’ve recently redeveloped. It flicks from opaque to clear at the touch of a switch and in addition the 4,704 square foot house comes with an 11.5 metre swimming pool in the sub-basement. It is for sale through James Forbes of Strutt & Parker and of it, he told The Guardian: “People who are buying these properties often like cars and want to look after those cars and keep them off the street… What they’ve cleverly done here, something I’ve not seen before, is make it so the glass can be opaque if you need it to be. If you’ve got your grubbly old mountain bike in there after a trip round the park you don’t have to look at it”.

The White House, Strete Ralegh, Devon – £7 million ($11.2 million)

Ignore the 21,909 square foot main house – it’s frankly horrific – but what any car collector may be impressed by here is the 3,895 square foot garage block. It comes complete with ten bays and a display area. Equally, if you want to pursue other leisure activities, there’s also a shooting range in the attic, a gymnasium, a climbing wall, a tennis court, a badminton court, a beach volleyball court, facilities for archery and hockey and a 9-hole golf course in the grounds. The White House – which sadly doesn’t have the slightest resemblance to the one inhabited by Barrack Obama – is for sale through Knight Frank.

13551 Tuscalee Circle, Draper, Utah – £3.7 million million ($5.9 million)

petrolheadsEqually unappealing in terms of its architectural style is what is described as a “car collector’s dream home” by agents Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. Built in 2010, this 16,246 square foot mansion comes with a detached 25-car garage complete with a car elevator. There’s also an indoor sports court, a basketball court, a golf simulator, a tennis court and a swimming pool, but who on earth would want to live in a house that looks like something out of The Flintstones?

Paradisio Del Mar, Manalapan, Florida – £18.5 million ($29.5 million)

petrolheadsBetween Boynton Beach and Lake Worth, a 7 bedroom, 14 bathroom ocean front house comes with a garage for 30 cars that features fuel pumps and indoor wash areas. There’s also a putting green, a dock for a 25-foot yacht and a billiard’s room with pub. In a promotional video for the property, agents Nestler Poletto describe Paradisio Del Mar as “a place where the sound of the ocean can sing to your soul” and somewhere to “live and share the finer things in life”.

1181 Hillcrest Road, Beverly Hills, California – £53.2 million ($85 million)

petrolheadsFor sale through Ben Bacal, this vast 23,000 square foot 90210 hillside home comes with all the toys. Aside from an 8-car air-conditioned garage, petrolheads will be pleased to learn that there are a further 16 parking spaces. What has been called a “bonkers mansion” also includes 8 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, a 24-seat “theater” and most bizarrely, a candy room. Back in September 2014, Curbed Los Angeles suggested that Jay-Z and Beyoncé might put in a bid. Sweet.

    1. I remember Matthew when you posted a picture of Park Lodge on your Facebook when it was boarded up and had been repossessed (I think). What a transformation. I clicked your link and read the brochure. It has been cleverly designed and is actually rather impressive. The developer deserves to be commended but I suppose given their £16.5 million price, they’ll actually just laugh all the way to the bank. A much better development than the neighbouring conversion of the former Ennismore Arms. The loss of that amenity to our neighbourhood – as grotty as it was – was a sad thing and the house that replaced it is to my mind revolting.

    2. Didn’t that fat fool Tom McLoughlin live in Ennismore Gardens at one point? Wasn’t there some story about him and his rent? Maybe given what Gillian says he was involved at that house. Either way, whoever was his landlord was rightly very unhappy but glad to be rid of him ultimately.

      • Tom McLoughlin is a small time crook and fast becoming a boring topic. The Elm house predators are far more relevant at this point in time. Let us not lose focus………

    3. Another example of irrelevance. You should focus on what is important in the world. Help dear Gerry and Kate McCann find their beloved daughter Madeleine. Seriously.

    4. Gillian, if you have nothing new to say nor nothing of any interest to add to these comments then Trot on as no one is interested in your repeated nonsense! Vi
