Dame Patricia Routledge’s rendition of ‘I’ve Been To A Marvellous Party’ for theatrical charities will most certainly lift your spirits
Joining amongst others Kate Burton, Sir Derek Jacobi and Dame Emma Thompson in a fundraiser to celebrate the legacy of Noël Coward, Dame Patricia Routledge – best known for brilliantly playing the redoubtable Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances from 1990 until 1995 – recently performed ‘I’ve Been To A Marvellous Party.’
Reaction to rendition was universally positive and on Twitter comments included: “Suddenly 2020 isn’t so bad after all” and “I think I need to watch Patricia Routledge performing ‘I’ve Been To A Marvellous Party’ as an uplifting tonic on a daily basis.”
Going further politician turned broadcaster Gyles Brandreth added: “I first heard Patricia Routledge do this in 1972 at the Mermaid Theatre in London… She’s incredible now. She was incredible then. Listen to this if you can. It’s just a joy.”
Of the fundraiser, Alan Brodie of the Noël Coward Foundation remarked:
“Noël Coward, a man of the theatre and one of the first transatlantic theatre celebrities, used his celebrity status to assist others. He galvanised his famous friends into raising considerable sums for charitable causes on both sides of the Atlantic and was also a Founder Member of The Combined Theatrical Charities, the predecessor organisation to Acting For Others.”
“Noël would have been very distressed by the shutdowns of the West End, Broadway and theatres across the world resulting in hardship for so many. It is therefore imperative, on Noël’s behalf, to help those in need by collaborating with Acting For Others in the UK and the Actors Fund in the US demonstrating just how much his influence and legacy lives on 100 years from that first play.”
“The performers have given their services for free and we are most grateful to them for offering their time and their talent to this important cause.”
