A merchant’s lodge

Georgian house in Lancashire will appeal to George Osborne’s new northern wealth

The north-west of England was once an industrial hub and now at a time George Osborne wishes to revive this with his ‘Northern Powerhouse’, house prices there are rising and new money is flocking in. An example of a house that will likely be attractive to such individuals is Grade II listed Forton Lodge, situated between the market town of Garstang and the city of Lancaster and priced at £1.25 million.

Constructed of squared sandstone under a hipped slate roof, Forton Lodge is imposing yet manageable. Accommodation totals some 5,378 square foot and includes three reception rooms and six bedrooms. Built around 1801 for a Liverpudlian merchant named William Brade, the house stands in 2.76 acres of gardens and paddocks and enjoys views to the Bleasdale Fells. It has many impressive features including high ceilings and large bay windows and has a look that is described as “particularly alluring”.

A raised swimming pool at the rear is not especially attractive

Forton Lodge is offered for sale by Armitstead Barnett.

Pluses: Georgian and Victorian character; well-proportioned rooms; convenient for Junction 33 of the M6 motorway.

Minuses: A coach house to the rear has been sold off and converted; an above ground swimming pool is not especially attractive; road noise from the nearby A6 main road.

    1. Anyone who makes money in the north Of England always moves to SE England, or London. The only people who would want that place are the chines, or the Russians, who have made their money abroad, and have no taste, class, or intelligence.

    2. Are you all blind? This is a fine house built of good stone and it would cost far more to rebuild than it is for sale for. I looked at the plans and though I’d make changes, it is a good layout overall. It would make a fine home for a couple to retire to or even a family or holiday home given its location close to the Lake District.

    3. ‘Retire in’ !! when you retire, you need a ‘very small kitchen’, you need an easy to maintain apartment, in a City, near to a good hospital, and shops. Not a rambling mansion, miles from anywhere. Nor is it a ‘family holiday home’. This house has reached the end of it’s life, unless it can be used for weddings, or corporate weekends.

    4. A fine piece of Georgian Architecture, however the twit that decided on an above ground pool, should be shot.
It’s a classic case of, heaps of folding, and no bloody taste.
Not only is it a bloody massive eyesore, who can use a pool in that part of the country anyway, it would be frozen over the best part of the year.

    5. Gosh, forgive my crass lack of je ne sais quoi, but it looks great to me

Should you be determined to avoid working class vowels; engage an upper crust butler and household staff; but I feel that this is a bit toppy

Have an ADC who will edit all your television viewing, as this is essential should you wish to avoid those vowels now that the BBC has embraced the LCD
