A wooden Ferrari is the only car allowed in Venice
Weighing 2,000 pounds, a wooden model of a Ferrari F50 is the only “car” allowed in Venice.
Powered by a Yamaha boat engine, the whittled pine vehicle is the creation of a craftsman named Livio De Marchi and took five months to build in 2001. De Marchi has also built a Jaguar, a VW Beetle, a Mercedes and a pumpkin carriage out of wood and recently donated them all to the San Diego Air & Space Museum.
Our Picture of the Week shows the Ferrari in Venice and of his experiences, De Marchi comments:
“I thought Venice would be like it was a hundred or two-hundred years ago when there weren’t any motorboats and you could travel along in a beautiful, peaceful way… But, paddling along in my little boat, I got out on the Grand Canal and all of a sudden up came the waves and the motorboats”.
“I said to my little son, who was with me, we’ve got to go back because this Grand Canal has turned into a freeway”.
