Splendor on the Riviera

Galerie Dumonteil’s ‘Splendor on the Riviera’ exhibition

The opening of Galerie Dumonteil’s latest exhibition, Splendor on the Riviera, in New York was very much an Anglo-American affair.

The showcase centres upon the works of Camille Roche (1894 – 1948), a favourite of the likes of Coco Chanel and the Rothschild family in the interwar period, and features the contents of an English aristocratic family’s dining room from their villa on the Côte d’Azur. The items have been in storage for over seventy years.

Camille Roche’s story is tinged with sadness. Married to an American who was deported by the Nazis, the artist – best known for his frescoes of animals, the countryside and families – died of sadness in 1948. His atelier in the Loire region was reopened by his children in 1990 and Galerie Dumonteil’s exhibition is the first in New York  since a showcase was held at the Wildenstein Gallery in 1937.
