Volkswagen launch car capable of doing 313 mpg
Fuel efficient cars are generally ugly beasts. Our least favourite is undoubtedly the G-Wiz but in creating the XL1, Volkswagen have created something quite stunning.
Priced at £92,490 and limited in production to just 250 units, the XL1 uses hybrid drive-train technology to dramatically increase fuel economy. The car has a fuel efficiency of 313 miles per gallon against the Toyota Prius’ 44 miles per gallon and weighs just 795 kilogrammes. Volkswagen state that, in theory, it could drive from the centre of London to the outskirts of Edinburgh in a straight line using just one gallon of fuel.
Capable of 0-60 miles per hour in 11.9 seconds, sadly the two-seater car has an electronically limited top speed of just 99 miles per hour. That, frankly, is about the only fault with it.
