Twyssenden Manor, near Goudhurst in Kent spent much of the 20th century in use as a youth hostel, but after being purchased by its current owner, a “successful businessman who, in the late 1990s, decided to abandon his City career in favour of a quieter life in the country,” in 2002 was restored to its former glory.

“There is an entire wall intricately decorated in a 17th-century fresco in what would have been the bridal chamber. It hasn’t been touched up, all the colours are original. It is now preserved behind a glass panel.”
