Zach Topley urges readers to give a Thunderclap for Jimmy Higham
Jimmy Higham, a teacher at Wellington College in Berkshire tragically died from cancer back in 2011, aged just 26. Jimmy was a hard-working, wise, funny and kind individual; an instant hit at the school. His unexpected death shocked the Wellington community.
A year later, his friends found a cover of Stevie Wonder’s Isn’t She Lovely which Jimmy recorded before his death. The song was released on iTunes, with sales going towards the Jimmy Higham Bursary Fund, which was set up to provide 16 year olds from the North-West with a life-changing opportunity – to study and play sport at the College. The whole Wellington community, as well as Jimmy’s family and friends in Wigan and Durham University, got behind the cause and drove the song to #11 on iTunes. WTV, the College’s student-led TV station created the music video for the song which reached #2 on the iTunes music video chart.
This year, myself and Cam Richards, a fellow Wellingtonian, are raising awareness of Jimmy’s story through a Thunderclap, a social media platform which enables us to amplify our message using the social reach the campaign’s supporters. If enough people support it, Thunderclap will automatically blast out a timed Facebook post or Tweet from all the supporters, creating a wave of attention. However, it won’t launch unless we reach our target number of supporters.
