London is Changing

London is Changing website voices the struggles of Londoners

The Steeple Times regularly reports on London’s top-heavy property market and with seemingly ordinary houses now regularly fetching upwards of £10 million, the needs of ordinary people are slipping through the net. A provocative new project by Rebecca Ross, a communication design lecturer at Central Saint Martins, seeks to address this.

What creativity can there be when only money can buy your next opportunity?
There is so much I love about London and I still feel the excitement of the city but is beoming increasingly polarised.
There have been many positives about moving however London is ‘home’ and I am no longer home.
London has become so unaffordable that I cannot afford to enjoy the benefits anymore. I am less well off than when I was a student here 10 years ago.

In her ‘London is Changing’ project, Ross invites those who are moving or have recently moved both into and away from London to share their insights as to why they are migrating via an anonymous web form. Selected responses are currently on display on digital billboards in Central London.

The comments left by respondents are well worth considering. The most telling reads:

“London has become so unaffordable that I cannot afford to enjoy the benefits anymore. I am less well off than when I was a student here 10 years ago”.
