Long may she reign

Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Coronation

Sixty years ago today, Princess Elizabeth became Her Majesty The Queen. Today we at The Steeple Times join with the nation in celebrating this historic moment.

Elizabeth II has shone as a constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states and their territories and dependencies and head of the 54-member Commonwealth of Nations and truly has led a remarkable life.

The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey on 2nd June 1953 was the first time that the ceremony was televised. An estimated 27 million people watched the event live whilst a further 11 million listened on the radio.

In the years since Her Majesty has served with dedication and humility. She has presided over great changes both in Great Britain and abroad and done so in a most dignified fashion. We do hope that you’ll accompany us in raising a glass to her wherever in the world you may be.

  1. I think we are so lucky in this country to have a monarchy. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have carried out their duties magnificently through so much change and in some dark times over so many years. As a result we are respected and admired throughout so many parts of the world and punch well above our weight in so many matters. I always say to the moaners that the benefits in trade, tourism and influence far outweigh any small cost plus the tradition, history and ceremony is fascinating and fun. For me, the Jubilee Celebrations combined with the brilliant Olympics last year showed us who we are as people and a nation and that despite the doom and gloom we get many things right.
I really admire Prince Philip. I do not think we realise how much he has contributed and supported the Queen and the monarchy over the years. Anyway I certainly will raise my glass.

  2. It is quite a pleasure to see in our times with all of its massive changes that there is someone to rely on. Her Majesty has been working hard and diligently for many decades for her country and even if she is not perfect – who would be? – it is a given that her discipline, her loyalty to her country and her selflessness has earned the respect of many. Long live the Queen!

  3. The Queen certainly is an amazing person. The problem that I see is that while royalty may have made perfect sense in times gone by, and perhaps even for some countries today, the concept of a royal family where rule on the basis of never-ending family succession and birth order is an anachronism in an era of education, opportunity, and democracy. There are many amazing people in this world. The Queen is only one of them. Perhaps some of the others are even more amazing. We now live in an era where anyone can aspire to lead a country.
