New UKIP leader Dick Braine is deservedly mocked for his unfortunate name, but the reality is that he’s deranged and delusional
There are people with unfortunate names – an example being a petrol station manager named Dick Assman (nickname: ‘Assman the Gasman’) – and then there’s Dick Braine.
Software developer and photographer turned politician Braine, appointed the ‘for the moment’ leader of UKIP (they’ve had nine leaders and acting leaders since 2016) on Saturday, was immediately mocked on Twitter by George Osborne because of his unfortunate name, but also called out because of his references to Tommy Robinson as a “political prisoner” and for his demand for a ban on the distribution of the Qu’ran.
Of far right Braine – who only has 2,142 followers on Twitter and once said he “often confused” Sadiq Khan with the leader of the 7/7 terror attacks – Labour MP David Lammy remarked: “I wish I could laugh at the fact that this man is literally called Dick Braine. But I can’t, because I know it will only mask the seriousness of his dangerous and vile Islamophobia. His predecessors would be proud.” Lammy is spot on, but given their recent pathetic showing in the European elections and now the appointment of this clown, UKIP are headed where they deserve: The electoral scrapyard.
