The best things in life remain free

Papers and paywalls

This morning a paywall went up on The Sun’s online portal, Sun+. This move follows those of the The Times and the Telegraph and some might suggest they are commercially justifiable. We disagree and approve of the stances of the Mail Online, The Independent, Evening Standard and MirrorOnline who continue to provide their online content for free.

We have no intention of putting up a paywall on The Steeple Times

The premise of the world wide web is to share information. It is not like the traditional newspaper model and given that stories can be sought out from sources other than those with paywalls, we do believe that the decision made by those charging will eventually backfire.

In response to News International’s £8.67 per month paywall fee for access to Sun+, the Mirror argued that they “wouldn’t dream of asking you [the “loyal reader”] to put aside over £100 a year to access our content”.

As editor of The Steeple Times I am often asked as to whether we will charge our readers for the content we offer. Today, we happily echo the Mirror and confirm that the best things in life shall remain free.
