Zac Goldsmith MP is right to argue the case for a recall law
In the wake of Patrick Mercer MP’s resignation of the Conservative whip, Zac Goldsmith MP took to Twitter to point out the need for a recall law.
In his tweet Goldsmith stated:
“If it’s bad enough for you to resign from your party, how can it be ok to continue representing constituents at all? Where’s that Recall?!”
Recalls date back to ancient Athenian times and are a procedure by which voters can remove an elected official from office through a direct vote before his or her term has ended.
Patrick Mercer was chosen by his constituents on a Conservative platform but is now an independent. Though he has stated he will retire at the next election, he no longer represents the party whom he stood and was elected for. Just as was the case with Shaun Woodward MP (who defected from the Conservatives to Labour), that this is allowed is just ludicrous.
It is most definitely time that Britain introduced recall legislation.
