Tesco heiress Dame Shirley Porter joined Twitter in August 2014 and describes herself there as “an English philanthropist and former UK politician residing in Israel”. She neglects to mention her rather controversial past there and, equally, on her website simply refers to how her guiding force as a Conservative politician in 1980s was to “clean-up London from an environmental as well as moral standpoint”. A former magistrate and campaigner against drugs, litter and sex shops, Porter is best known for the “Homes for Votes” scandal – which resulted in her and five others being ordered to pay £27,000,000 for the costs of the illegal activity – but now spends her days managing her family’s charitable activities via The Porter Foundation.
