The personification of a political swingometer, Gillian Duffy thought she was speaking for the nation when she stated: “I’m voting Labour. I want a Labour government and to get behind Ed Miliband as our leader” prior to the 2015 General Election. Her wishes went the same way as Miliband’s stone. Described as a “bigoted woman” by Gordon Brown in 2010 (he was subsequently embarrassed into making an apology to her in person), Rochdale based Duffy has also flirted with the “authenticity” of UKIP’s Nigel Farage and liked to sing “The Red Flag” as a teenager. She is a widow, mother of one and a grandmother of two.
