Jackie Collins OBE (born Jacqueline Collins, 1937 – 2015)
The Steeple Times
The younger sister of the diva-esque actress Joan Collins, “Queen of the Bonkbuster” Jackie Collins wrote 32 novels and sold over 500 million books during her lifetime. Twice married and a mother of three, this big-haired novelist was born in Hampstead and held dual British-American citizenship from 1960. Despite her early works being condemned by Dame Barbara Cartland as “filthy and disgusting”, she made a fortune of upwards of £60 million and became famous worldwide. Of her success, Collins once modestly remarked: “I’m a storyteller. I’m not a literary writer and I never pretended to be” whilst her family’s statement on her death instead rightly lauded her as “a trail blazer for women in fiction and a creative force”.
