One of the most famous kidnap and Stockholm syndrome victims ever, Patty Hearst is the granddaughter of William Randolph Hearst, the inspiration for Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane. Taken by a left-wing urban guerrilla group in Berkeley, California in February 1974 aged just 19, Hearst spent over a year with the the Symbionese Liberation Army. During her period of incarceration she was party to a store shooting, a bank robbery and renamed herself “Tania” in honour of the nom de guerre of Che Guevara’s sidekick Tamara Bunke. After being captured and serving 22 months in prison, President Jimmy Carter commuted her sentence and released Patty Hearst in February 1979. She subsequently married her former bodyguard, Bernard Shaw, had two children named Gillian and Lydia Hearst, and was granted a full pardon by President Clinton in January 2001. Of her subsequent life, Patty Hearst, who became an actress and French bulldog enthusiast, has stated: “Things are nice”. Surprisingly, she has just 350 followers on Twitter.
