Doris Thompson MBE OBE (1903 – 2004) and Geoffrey Thompson (1936 – 2004)

Doris and Geoffrey ThompsonThis mother and son duo were the stalwarts that built Britain’s most popular seaside attraction, the 40-acre Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Fairgrounds were their life and even at 95, Malvern Ladies’ College educated Doris Thompson MBE OBE was the first to ride her park’s 100mph Playstation ride. After getting off, she gamely stated: “That’s the closest I’ve been to heaven so far”. Shrewsbury and Christ’s College, Cambridge educated Geoffrey Thompson (AKA “Mr Funshine”), aged just 67, sadly predeceased his 101-year old mother by 11 days.

  1. They sold Pepsi and burgers and candy floss. They are partly to blame for how fat the British have become. Nothing to celebrate.

    1. Fiona advocates a nanny state. What we eat and drink is our own business. The fairground burgers, Pepsi and candy floss were lush, and I pulled so many chicks at the fair in my youth. Why was Liberal Cyril Smith so fat? What was he eating? I suppose toss salad…………… RiP Doris Thompson. Blackpool Pleasure Beach Fairgrounds were a hoot in days gone by.
