A member of the New York based Durst real estate dynasty and worth some $100 million, cross-dresser Robert Durst first came to the attention of the public when his first wife, Kathie, disappeared in January 1982. After his journalist friend, Susan Berman, was murdered in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve in 2000, interest in Durst resurfaced before he was arrested on suspicion of the murder of his neighbour Morris Black in Galveston, Texas in October 2001. Cleared of that killing in 2003 and diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, Robert Durst was rearrested in March 2015 for the slaying of Susan Berman. At the time his brother, Douglas Durst, commented: “We hope he will finally be held accountable for all he has done” whilst a television crew he was being filmed by managed to accidentally record him state such things as: “There it is. You’re caught. What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course” and “I did not tell the whole truth, nobody tells the whole truth”.
