Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot 2013 truly was a fashion parade
Royal Ascot is known for four things: horse racing, royalty, fashion and drunken revelry.
The Mail Online, which normally delights in showing images of the over-refreshed, this year focused on the fashion faux pas instead. In an article by Louise Eccles, the paper reported that a milliner named Tracy Rose was “reduced to tears” and “ordered to hand over her [Royal Enclosure] pass after the fashion police ruled that her pink and blue dress was too short”.
Russell Rose, the milliner’s husband, is said to have “remonstrated” with the authorities. He commented:
“They are favouring certain people and discriminating against others. I understand Princess Beatrice had a short dress on yesterday and she had no problems getting in. If you look around you can see lots of women who are technically breaking the rules who are being admitted”.
Elsewhere it was reported that 20 dress code assistants are now employed to “police” Royal Ascot’s fashion guidelines and that those breaking the rules are offered a “not-to-be-refused offer to buy a tie or pashmina for £5 or rent a hat or waistcoat for a refundable £50 on the return of the clothing”. Nick Smith, a spokesman for the course, told Reuters:
“It needed to be reiterated that this is a formal event and we are proud of that although that does not mean that it has to be stuffy or old-fashioned”.
