First Batmobile for sale for £3.2 million
Built originally at a cost of $250,000 (the equivalent of $2.2 million or £1.4 million today) in 1955 as a Lincoln Futura concept car, the car that then became the first Batmobile in 1965 is now for sale for £3.2 million ($5 million).
Described as being a car “every man, woman or child in the free world can easily identify without the slightest hesitation” by Roger Johnson of the Barrett-Jacskon Collection in Arizona – who is selling the vehicle on behalf of a businessman named Rick Champagne – the car was transformed from the Futura into the rocket-powered Batmobile in just three weeks at a cost of $30,000 (the equivalent of $227,000 or £145,000 today). Gadgets include a Batphone, Bat-Ray Projector and an automatic tyre inflating system.
Last sold in 2013 for £3 million ($4.6 million), when it became the most expensive movie vehicle ever sold alongside James Bond’s Aston Martin from Goldfinger, the car was the creation of the customiser George Barris. Of it, Roger Johnson commented:
“The Batmobile is much more than a flashy mode of transportation for crime-fighting superheroes”.
“Some of the most intriguing elements of this machine are its fantastic gadgets just the things every crime-crusher needs. They are proof positive that a fiction writer’s imagination knows no technological bounds”.
