Getting Lyrical

Review: The Lyric in Soho

Soho is an area that one associates with the likes of pornographer Paul Raymond, gambling addict ‘Soho Pam’ and the legendarily rude landlord Norman Balon. Discovering The Lyric in Great Windmill Street, therefore, was a refreshing revelation.

Indeed, on the surface, here you’ll find a traditional Victorian public house but here also you’ll discover a hidden secret offering simple yet wholesome food and an array of draught beers including Rough Justice bitter, Redwell 6% Indian pale ale and Titanic Stout.

Being within close proximity of The Lyric Theatre and other West End venues, this pub’s management is unsurprisingly enthusiastic about the arts. Jan, one of the most welcoming ladies we’ve had the pleasure to encounter behind the bar of a London pub in some time, writes film and theatre reviews in her spare time.

The menu at The Lyric is typical of most gastropubs but whilst the quality of the food is surprisingly far above par, the prices are truly reasonable. A steak sandwich, complete with chips and a salad, is yours for £6.50 whilst sausage and mash costs just £10.

    1. As I said on Facebook, give me the French House in Dean Street anyday. No phones, no musak, no pints (keeps most yobs out), good lunch-time grub and the opportunity to have good conversation.

    2. Love the French – check out the upstairs bar – they have started doing Sunday lunches which are great. What could be lovelier than hoovering up a roast and good red (+ Armagnac) while looking out onto rainy Dean street? But I will try the Lyric also.
