French chef Alain Ducasse is right to condemn Dry January and to suggest diners drink more, not less
January is frankly the month when people should drink more, not less. It is a month solicitors celebrate as they get the most instructions to file on behalf of divorcing couples, it is the month when the weather is miserable and it is the month when people get their scary bills for their Christmas excess.
Yesterday, the French chef Alain Ducasse took on the menace that is Dry January and stated: “I like swimming against the tide.” He will henceforth be encouraging diners to order wines by the bottle rather than by the glass by offering top bottles of Burgundy and Bordeaux at knock down prices.
“I’ve noted [the Dry January] trend, but I don’t want to see or hear of it, I am opposed to it,” he commented. He added: “[I want to] rid consumers of their inhibitions [with regard to wine drinking].”
We join those saluting this legend.
