Amanda LindhoutThis Canadian humanitarian campaigner and journalist became the news herself after being kidnapped, beaten and raped by fundamentalist teens in Somalia in 2008. Released 15 months later, Amanda Lindhout bravely shunned the description “victim” and remarked: “Survivor is a much better word”. A former model and cocktail waitress, Lindhout published her memoirs, A House in the Sky, in 2013 and set up the Global Enrichment Foundation to fund university scholarships for Somalian women. The epitome of forgiveness, Amanda Lindhout has 12,000 followers on Twitter.
