The house of fun

A coastal estate complete with its own private cove comes to the market for £7.5 million

Described by the selling agents as a “private coastal estate with fun as its mantra”, Redlap House near Dartmouth in Devon is situated in a 30-acre frost free valley that runs down to the sea.

Largely Georgian, the 8,400 square foot main house has been designed to make the most of the spectacular coastal views. It includes 4 reception rooms, 7 bedrooms and a cinema room with a 46’ screen. Additional accommodation is provided in the form of a staff flat, estate office, 6 garages and a 7,000 square foot 2-bedroom guest house with a 60’ indoor pool and a further cinema with a 22’ screen.

Originally the home of the Governor of Dartmouth – whom was well known for supplementing his already generous income by smuggling goods through the hidden cove – Redlap’s private beach is accessible only by sea or from steps from the gardens.

Savill’s Martin Lamb, who is marketing Redlap House, told The Telegraph:

“It’s like the South of France but in Devon… It is a wonderful family home set back from the cliff in tropical gardens. There is very rarely any frost and in the garden you can actually grow bananas… It has always been the most expensive coastal home in Devon and is the best house I have sold”.

This is a house that wouldn’t look out of place in an Agatha Christie novel. Savills seek £7.5 million.
