Quote of the Week: Repaying the wronged

Section:

Nigel Evans is right to demand the CPS repay his legal expenses

Last Friday, contributor to The Steeple Times Nigel Evans was cleared of nine charges of sexual offences against seven men. Whilst these non-victims disgracefully remain under the shroud of anonymity, the Member of Parliament for the Ribble Valley will wrongly be best remembered for this case.

Our Quote of the Week comes was made by Evans during his interview with the Mail on Sunday’s Simon Walters:

“If someone is dragged through the courts through no fault of their own and is acquitted they should get their legal fees back from the Crown Prosecution Service budget. Maybe that will make them focus on whether a case is worth pursuing”.

Evans is quite right. Those who are falsely accused should not be forced to pick up the bill for the incompetency of the police and the CPS. It is time for change.

    1. I couldn’t agree more with the comments made by Mr Nigel Evans. In addition to this, anyone dragged through the criminal courts and subsequently acquitted by a jury should instigate legal proceedings for “Malicious Prosecution” and vigorously seek monetary compensation damages against the Police force responsible and Crown Prosecution Service.

    2. I agree with Matthew on this one. I’ve met Nigel Evans, at the House, on several occasions, usually on the Terrace. He is an amusing, gregarious man. I liked him. Though in view of his well-known reputation I kept my back to the wall as it were. (Though for heaven sake, who would fancy an old wreck like me?)! He, and others like him, found blameless by a jury should have their costs paid by the court.
