Watering the asylum

A bizarre, eight-floor converted water tower in the middle of an ugly redevelopment of an Essex lunatic asylum remains on the market despite a price cut of £200,000

The Landmark Tower at Repton Park (formerly known as the London County Lunatic Asylum) in Essex is a property that will only appeal to someone truly eccentric. It has failed to sell despite a price cut from £1,250,000 to £1,050,000 and is currently on the market through Knightsbridge Estate Agents.

Good taste clearly was thrown out with the bath water in this bathroom

This floor plan illustrates the somewhat awkward nature of the layout of the accommodation on offer

Featuring 2,834 square foot of accommodation over eight floors, this 170 foot tall Grade II listed Victorian water tower was converted in 2002 and now features 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, an L-shaped reception room and a dining kitchen on the top floor. A lift serves six out of eight of the levels.

Though the agents point out that this “very special property” is “steeped in history”, the development is best known for being haunted by former patients and the ugly housing that was built as part of its redevelopment by Crest Nicholson from 2001 onwards. Those with a fear of heights need not apply.

    1. It should be the home of Dorien!!!!!! It’s in Chigwell……… Birds of a Feather land. No wonder it’s so badly decorated.

    2. The view will improve steadily in coming years, as trees mature in the adjoining subdivision. I too dislike the style of the interiors, but a new owner could change it.

    3. I lived on Repton it is beautiful…. Whoever has done this review on the water tower sounds very bitter with there own life … Or maybe just the property they currently live in

    4. The author of this article sounds very bitter with his repeated use of ‘ugly development’. Repton Park is a beautiful development of mixed new build and converted hospital buildings. Open green spaces have been kept with many original buyers still in occupancy and thier young families now growing. Yes, some like their cheap bling but that is not representative of the general owner. Perhaps the author is representative of the sanctimonius bitter nature of this publication.

    5. I live in Repton , it’s absolutely stunning with lovely people. I only wish I could afford the tower. People criticising , I’d like to see your houses lol guaranteed you’d swap for the tower 🙄 pure jealousy, live and let live
